"Don't wish me happiness I don't expect to be happy all the time....It's gotten beyond that somehow. Wish me courage and strength and a sense of humor. I will need them all." Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Forest of Light #2 - a tapestry valance

Before my daughter was born I did a tapestry commission that got me interested in weaving something similar yet quite different. So when I finished that piece I wove this one. After I removed it from the loom I put the weaving away - unfinished.  I think most people who create do this at some point and while it can take a long time it has never taken me this long (4 years or so) to return to it. It's been very dry here but the other night when I heard the sweet sound of luscious raindrops on the roof I was brought back to the unfinished weaving. In the early morning light as the rain fell dream-like outside our windows and turned our world verdant shades of green I baked bread and a cake. I skipped my daily laundry chore and still in my pyjama's I took out the weaving and began to make the feeling a reality. I had a friend, F. who unexpectedly passed away shortly after I wove this piece. F. was a huge supporter of my weaving and my lifestyle and I was anxious to show F. this piece. But F. never saw it.  It's hard to explain the feelings the finished piece invoked when I stepped back after hanging it in my window. I know F. would have loved it; everything and the organic direction it was pulling me in. Forest of Light #2 is in my etsy shop now. My phone won't allow me to post a picture and a link so I'm posting the link to make it easier for you and I hope you will stop by to check it out.

  1. My goodness! What beauty! I just went to the etsy shop to see what you had made, and it is just lovely! I know your friend F would have been thrilled to see such a beautiful finished piece of work, and isn't it wonderful how the rain inspired you to finish! We have had a lot of rain here too... wonder if it is the same storm system? Thankful, very thankful for the rain! God is good! And how He used the rain to inspire you to finish such a beautiful piece of handiwork. Wonderful!

    1. I knew in the night when it started to rain that I wouldn't be going to work in the morning but I don't know how it all came together but it did and for that I am thankful. Thank you for your complement. I love the rain. It has a beauty of it's own. Thank you for visiting it's always a pleasure to hear from you.

  2. Oh Ronda, your piece (I just visited and clicked, FAVORITE) is truly outside of the expected form of a tapestry; your shaping of it into trees and allowing the light from behind is a brilliant move. That your friend inspired this and yet was unable to see it, this is part of the art. I am finally learning that our arts take TIME and living, and sometimes the loss of someone near to us. Putting away a poem for me then bringing it out a year later is vital for my growth. I would imagine a piece of art for you has to be the same.

We too had rain yesterday, on my FIRST day off from school. It was lush. I wrote a small poem and even posted on my blog, where I am returning.

So good to see you here. Peace. Anita

  4. Ronda! Good morning! Thank you for coming to visit my post! Yes, it took me being away from posting to figure out how it can work into my working schedule. Now on summer vacation, I can sort out my priorities and figure things out!

How I love that tapestry of yours; and your kind words really mean a lot to me. If all the world could only understand to appreciate one another's worlds...what a place this would be.

    Happy day! Anita

i cannot add much to the already wonderful comments about this.
to look at the dripping forest and the rain through such a beautiful piece of art... and to know its history...
almost brings tears if i let it.

  7. Ronda, that piece must've been quite difficult to work so that you ended up with trees. Your pieces are lovely. I'm glad you got to finish this one. There is such satisfaction in completing a project that you thought you might never finish.

    1. Thank you Kimberly. It's all about technique. I wasn't able to fully convey the roundness of the trunks in my pictures and I'm not really sure at this point what or if there is anything that I can do to better my iphone photography skills. Thanks for visiting my shop and for commenting.
